Atheism in Christianity

Christianity requires theism?

"One may be a theist and not be a Christian,
but he cannot be a Christian and not be a theist."

-"Theism" in The century dictionary and cyclopedia;
cited in UU [Unitarian Universalist] Christian (spring 1987) 42:1, p 25, f1

compare with Ernst Bloch's earlier statement,
"Only an atheist can be a good Christian,"
to which Christian theologian Jürgen Moltmann replied,
"But only a Christian can be a good atheist." ...
