REM: Losing My Religion
Oh
life is bigger,
it's bigger than you
and you are not me
the things that i will go to
the distance in your eyes ...
oh no, i've said too much,
i've set it up
That's me in the corner,
that's me in the spotlight
losing my religion
trying to keep up with you
and i don't know if i can do it
oh no i've said too much
i haven't said enough
i thought that i heard you laughing
i thought that i heard you sing ...
i think i thought i saw you try.
Every whisper,
every waking hour
i'm choosing my confessions
trying to keep an eye on you
like a hurt lost and blinded fool fool
oh no i've said too much
i've set it up.
Consider this, consider this
of the century
consider this
- that brought me to my knees
hell,
what if all these fantasies come
flailing around
now i've said
too much
I thought that i heard you laughing
i thought that i heard you sing
i think i thought i saw you try.
That was just a dream
that was just a dream
That's me in the corner
that's me in the spotlight
losing my religion
trying to keep up with you
and i don't know if i can do it
oh, no, i've said too much
i haven't said enough
i thought that i heard you laughing
i thought that i heard you sing
i think i thought i saw you try
but that was just a dream
try
cry
why
try
that was just a dream
just a dream
just a dream
dream

in your song list you mention REM's "Losing My Religion", which, although it
sounds like it, is not actually about religion. As Michael Stipe has stated in
interviews, it is about an argument - though not with a god. I think "religion"
isn't used in the strictest sense; after all, this is Michael Stipe we're talking
about. :) Anyhow I thought I'd mention it. Take it easy ...

just was wondering if you knew that "losing my religion" is an
expression used in the southern states (especially in la-where i am
from)....the expression actually means losing one's temper...believe me,
as i was growing up,i heard my mother say many times; "you make me so
mad, mad enough to lose my religion!" so as stipe suggested...yes, an
argument....losing one's temper....:) just thought i'd let you in on
that little tidbit...in case you were not aware! thanks...
- Dennis Morales Jr
actually, "losing my religion" is not really about an "argument," necessarily.
michael stipe has said it is a song "of unrequited love" along the same lines as
"every breath you take" by the police. just a thought....
- Michael L. Iafrate
my understanding is that the phrase "losing my religion" is a Southern
colliquolism meaning intense frustration and irritation, to the point where you
lose control (your "religion"), and doesn't really mean it literally.
-aiken
I am under the impression that 'loosing my religion' is an euphamism for
getting angry or loosing my temper and therefor that the REM Song is not
necessarily atheist in intent.
